'Superbad' Is Hella Good
Went to see "Superbad" the other night with friends and I have to say I haven't laughed that hard in a long, long time. It's a very crude, exploitive and completely realistic view of what it's like to be a high school student and like I said, if you go into the movie with your top button undone and not all uptight, you will have a blast ("I think we just cock-blocked McLovin.") Here is an interview with some members of the cast. It's a not-safe-for-work version so be careful where you watch.
Here's the short movie trailer:
Here's the longer movie trailer:
Tennis Hottie O' The Day
SuperLiga Finals Highlights
Here's the highlights from last night's SuperLiga final between the Galaxy and Pachuca at the Home Depot Center won by Pachuca, 4-3, on penalty kicks after the teams tied 1-1 after 120 minutes. It actually was a very entertaining game with a lot of atmosphere and buzz despite there being only 12,500 in the stadium. It wasn't that they couldn't sell the tickets (technically it was a sellout), it was that Cal State Dominguez Hills limited the crowd because the game wasn't on the original schedule and it was the first week of classes. Only in American soccer. David Beckham got hurt (out for six weeks because of sprained knee ligament) and the Galaxy's Chris Klein scored on an amazing bicycle kick goal in the waning seconds of regulation to tie it. Landon Donovan choked though as he had a chance to clinch it during penalty kicks. When he missed, Pachuca goalkeeper Miguel Calero gave him the Dikembe Mutombo finger-wag. It was good stuff.
Karma At The Little League WS

There's something to be said about karma and the Golden Rule about treating others the way you'd like to be treated. Such simple concepts, yet so many of us in this world forget them all too quickly. The photo above is from the Little League World Series. This is the U.S. Championship game between Texas and Georgia. The player in the dark jersey rounding the bases is Micah Wells of Texas. Micah just hit a home run, but in the spirit of sportsmanship, Georgia shortstop Dalton Carriker extends his hand to congratulate Micah on his way around. A simple, classy move. Carriker later came in to pitch and shut down Texas to put Georgia in the title game the next day. So the next day the title game against Japan goes to extra innings and wouldn't you know it, Dalton Carriker hits a game-winning walk-off home run to deliver the World Series title to Georgia. A deserved ending as payment for a simple gesture. Below is Dalton enjoying his moment of glory. And who was the first Georgia player to help console the shattered Japanese Little Leaguers? The video can be found here.

Miss South Carolina Responds
Here is our friend, Miss Teen South Carolina, Lauren Caitlin Upton, who has quickly become an internet sensation with her answer to the question about how one-fifth of Americans can't locate the U.S. on a world map, and why do you think that is? The "Today" show gave her a chance to set the record straight, treating her with kid gloves and actually letting her answer the question again. I'll reserve any more comment except to say that even as a U.S. American myself, the "rah-rah," apologetic approach taken by Ann Curry and Matt Lauer, such as, made me want to gag. This incident has inspired a much-needed website though.
'The Office' And Summer Vacation
Here's what the characters from "The Office" did on their summer vacation as we lead up to the late September season opener. One thing we find out is that the new Pam "is letting her hair down." Good stuff.

Georgia Wins Little League WS
Doesn't get any better than this. Amazing drama at the Little League World Series once again with the fifth walk-off homer of the tournament in the championship game. Dalton Carriker now goes down in LLWS history with Cody Webster. I must say I was touched how the Georgia kids seemed to genuinely feel for the Japanese kids as they cried. Here's an interesting article from the San Diego Union Tribune from two years ago about the "dark" side of the LLWS and all the pressure the attention creates. It mentions Cody Webster.
Michael Vick Finally Speaks Out
A very contrite Michael Vick speaks to the public after his plea deal regarding the federal charges against him in the dogfighting case. What he's accused of is appalling but I do give the credit for speaking without resorting to a prepared statement. On the other hand, he speaks in the third person a few times and plays the "I-found-Jesus" card. Hopefully, he's sincere about his apologies and for accepting responsibility.
Owen Wilson Suicide Attempt?
OK, so this is Fox News reporting the story with Star Magazine as the source so who knows what the real story is. But if it's true, what the hell has happened to Owen Wilson? This is the last guy I would think has suicidal thoughts. He seems fairly together, free spirited and easy going. I guess you can never tell. Hopefully it will all turn out OK.

Miss Teen USA South Carolina
I guess there's a reason why they call them "beauty" contestants. Now I have a headache.
'The Office' Season Premiere
The season premiere for "The Office" is coming on Sept. 27 and we'll get answers to all those questions we've been waiting for, especially the whole Jim and Pam thing. Anyway, here's a little trailer although I'm not sure this includes any new footage.

Peter Griffin Visits The Doctor
Here's another of my favorite "Family Guy" scenes. This is the one when Peter visits the doctor who keeps making him and Lois think something is seriously wrong. This video is posted by request and even includes a nice little tribute to "The Price Is Right" at the beginning.
Jen Bending Everywhere On 'BB8'
Here's Jen (remember Jen?) from 'Big Brother 8' walking all over the house in a two-piece looking for bags of her clothes that have been hidden from her. A lot of bending and stretching, without a care if her bottoms are falling or her top is about to cut loose (which it does). She seems to be the one who will be evicted this week so this may be the last of the voyeur videos of her.

'Big Brother's' Amber Is Dumb
I know the point of "Big Brother" is that it's a game and you have to be savvy (what does savvy mean?) to get very far, but could this girl Amber, who is a contestant, really be as dumb as she seems in this clip below? Could it be an act? Could it be a strategy? You be the judge.
Classic Galaxy-Red Bulls Game
Here are the highlights from Saturday's Galaxy-Red Bulls game that drew more than 66,000 fans to Giants Stadium. This was considered by some already to be a landmark game for MLS as it tries to gain a stronger foothold in the American sporting landscape with the help of David Beckham.

Who Is This Mystery Man?
For those who don't know, Kent Hrbek was a key component to those strong Minnesota Twins teams of the late 1980s and early '90s. Kent was back in town with former teammates to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Twins World Series title in 1987. This is what Hrbek used to look like during his playing days.Little League World Series Drama
The Little League World Series started Friday in South Williamsport, Pa., and there was a tremendous moment from the first day. You may have seen the highlight on SportsCenter as it was the top play of the day. Here's the situation: Walpole, Mass., up 3-2, two outs, bottom of the sixth, the tying run for Mason, Ohio, at third and one of the their weak hitters at the plate (kid had struck out twice earlier). So then this kid sends a deep drive to center, about to become a walk-off hero, and the center fielder from Walpole, races to the fence, times his jump and snares the potential home run to end the game. Amazing! Here's the highlight from a local TV news broadcast:
Here a video with the catch and an interview with the kid who made it:

Jose Offerman Is A Nut Job
Jose Offerman, a former major leaguer who once was a promising shortstop prospect for the Dodgers, was arrested this week and charged with assault after he attacked the pitcher and catcher for the Bridgeport Bluefish of the Atlantic League with his bat after being hit by a pitch. It brought back horrible memories of when Juan Marichal did the same thing to Dodger catcher Johnny Roseboro while Sandy Koufax was pitching. Former Dodger pitcher Tommy John (yes the namesake of the famous surgery) is the manager for Bridgeport. I had hesitated posting this because I was waiting to see if there was video. But one of my sources from high on the hills of Los Angeles pointed me to this link, which comes the closest to showing how this all developed. Below is a video of Tommy John being interviewed on ESPN about the incident.
Michael Vick Has More Problems
With Michael Vick considering a plea deal now that his partners in crime (allegedly) have all abandoned him, realizing that cooperating with the government might be the better road to take if the goal is to keep themselves from long terms in federal pound-me-in-the-ass prison, another interesting and disturbing allegation has emerged. Check out this link that says an inmate in a South Carolina jail has filed a $63 billion (yes that's no typo -- BILLION) against the Atlanta Falcons quarterback. Instead of me outlining all the shenanigans that are going on here, it's best to click the link to read the wackiness that Jonathan Lee Riches alleges. But if reading the link isn't enough for you, make sure to click here and see the actual filing of the lawsuit, handwritten by Riches "due to restrictions on typewriters" (gee I wonder why). Many thanks to my East Coast source for pointing me in the direction of this story.
Beckham's Goal In Spanish
Here's David Beckham's goal from the TeleFutura broadcast. This also includes Beckham's assist on Landon Donovan's goal early in the second half.
Here's a pretty cool version from the perspective of someone in the stands:
David Beckham's First Galaxy Goal
OK, so here's David Beckham's first goal for the Galaxy in a 2-0 win over D.C. United in a SuperLiga semifinal on Wednesday night. This is with English broadcasters and is pretty good, but the Spanish commentators went nuts as usual but I couldn't find a decent replay of it yet so I'll keep looking and add it later.
And Then There's Maude
So my wife and I are sitting in bed just now watching TV Land Confidential on famous show finales, and they show this clip of Bea Arthur on the show "Maude." My wife starts laughing and I'm thinking, "What's so funny?" so I ask her. She says, "I'm thinking about Peter Griffin," and it takes me a few seconds but once I realize what she's talking about we both just start laughing our asses off and can't stop. Here's why:
And in case you don't remember the real opening to "Maude" here it is:
This is our life at 1:30 in the morning... every morning!

David Beckham Starts, Scores!
David Beckham made his first start for the Galaxy tonight and scored his first goal on one of his patented free kicks in the 27th minute to give his team a 1-0 halftime lead. It was quite a Hollywood moment, sans the sellout crowd since this SuperLiga semifinal game at the Home Depot Center was not on the original schedule and fans have been disappointed lately because of Beckham's injury keeping him off the pitch regularly. Still, it was one of those chills-down-your-spine events (at least for a soccer fan). Beckham took the free kick about 25 yards away and bent one around the D.C. United wall and into the upper left corner, freezing goalkeeper Troy Perkins, who seemed clueless how to defend Beckham's attack. Perkins was actually moving the other way when Beckham unleashed his bender. Quite a thrill indeed. No doubt this will be the No. 1 viewed video on YouTube soon. I'll post it here once I see it up. UPDATE: The Galaxy won, 2-0, and Beckham assisted on a second-half goal by Landon Donovan on a beautiful through ball that Donovan ran onto. In the meantime, here's a picture sequence of Beckham's goal:
'Hey There Delilah' For Stalkers
Here's the stalker version of the song "Hey There Delilah" by the Plain White T's. Some of the lyrics are pretty funny and the guy's voice, being as bad and pathetic as it is, really makes the song all the better. Originally found the video here.
Here's the real song and video:
Seinfeld Reunion 2027
This is an interesting clip from Frank Caliendo doing a parody of Seinfeld. The premise is that Seinfeld is having a reunion show in 2027. Caliendo, best known for his John Madden impression, does all the characters. His Jerry and Kramer are decent, but George is way off. Newman's not bad, but I won't even mention Elaine. The site of Caliendo in drag is enough to make me look away. I didn't think this was that great, but since I'm such a Seinfeld fan, I thought I'd post it. If the video isn't working below, the link can be found here:
Eagle Punter Gets Cheap Shotted
Ever since the Rams left town, I haven't been a big NFL fan (yeah I know I'm probably the only one), but I did see this hit on the highlights the other night. I immediately thought what a cheap shot it was. It reminded me of a BOW (search BOW on this blog to understand) because it was an Australian punter who took the brunt of this brutality for no good reason. I was pleased to hear at least the color commentator agreeing that this kind of play has no business in the sport.

Ana Ivanovic Wins It All!
So Ana did it and took home the top prize at the East West Bank Classic at the Home Depot Center in Carson. Ana, who looked respledid in purple all week, knocked out Serbian countrywoman Jelena Jankovic in the semifinals on Saturday and then worked over Russian Nadia Petrova, 7-5, 6-4. So in honor of Ana's big victory, we thought there's no better time than to do an Ana photo gallery. Hopefully, this is a preview of good things to come at the U.S. Open. Hey, last year, Maria Sharapova won at Carson and that led to her winning in New York soon after. We will be following Ana's progress.
LOS ANGELES, Aug 12 (Reuters) - Ana Ivanovic confirmed her status as one of the U.S. Open favourites with victory over Nadia Petrova in the Los Angeles Classic final on Sunday.
The 19-year-old Serb has really found her form in the past three months, winning Berlin in May, and reaching the French Open final and Wimbledon semis before arriving in Los Angeles.
The tall, broad-shouldered brunette has taken down several top-10 players in the process, including Maria Sharapova, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Jelena Jankovic and Petrova, whom she overwhelmed 7-5 6-4 in the Los Angeles final.
"I've beaten most of the top players and that's given my me a lot of confidence," Ivanovic told reporters. "In women's tennis, anyone can beat anyone. When I play players better ranked better than me, I feel I can beat them. I want to enjoy this because this is the best time of my career. I'm really happy to be at the place where I am now.
Part of the reason for Ivanovic's rise is the work she has put in off the court with her trainer Scott Burns.
The Serb's increased fitness and agility have enabled her to control matches with her huge forehand.
"Her fitness coach did a good job with her, she's lost some weight and is dangerous and even out of difficult positions she's coming up with big shots," Petrova said.
Petrova said Ivanovic would be at least a top-five contender at the U.S. Open starting in two weeks.
Ivanovic has beaten Maria Sharapova twice but has yet to overcome world number one Justin Henin, Wimbledon champion Venus Williams or Australian Open champion Serena Williams.
"I feel pretty confident in my game and would like to challenge them and play them again because definitely I would have a good chance," Ivanovic said.
Ivanovic will reach a career high number four when the world rankings are released on Monday.

Cheney And The Iraq 'Quagmire'
What's amazing about this video is that Dick Cheney said these things in 1994. And yeah, I know this was pre-9/11, and a different conflict, and all, but it's still extremely maddening, and frankly sad, and illustrates the arrogance of the current administration and the depths to which it has sunk at the expense of its own people.

Corey Perry And The Stanley Cup
If you follow hockey, you know that when a team wins the Stanley Cup, every player (and most in the organization ... or is that or-gan-I-za-tion?) gets to have his day with the Cup. On Friday, it was Corey Perry's day and the Anaheim Ducks player took it to a private party. Here's what the photo caption information said:
Ana Ivanovic Wins Again
Kobe Bryant On Jimmy Kimmel
Here is the video (in two parts) of Kobe Bryant on the Jimmy Kimmel Show. I didn't watch this fully so I'm not sure how it went. I heard that Jimmy softballed him and didn't ask about his wife and the rumors of divorce. Actually Vanessa was at the taping and everything apparently looked as if it was bliss, contrary to the idea that Kobe and Vanessa were on the verge of a divorce. This also comes on the heels of another report that Kobe raised eyebrows by showing up alone at the Mirage's tops-optional pool in mid-July. Who knows with Kobe. I've pretty much had it with the guy.

Giada's "Looks" Of The Day
Giada looks spanking in green and this was a good day for her from the episode, "Feel Good Foods." We'll start with a picture of Giada fisting this chicken. Once again, Madge gets credit for many of these pictures, including the chicken fister.

And here's some bonus coverage for my brother-in-law, who said I'd have him hooked if I threw in some pictures of another Food Network chef, Rachel Ray.

David Beckham's MLS Debut
David Beckham made his MLS regular-season debut tonight in a 1-0 loss by the Galaxy to D.C. United, and, of course, there were many firsts. Probably the one that surprised me the most was when D.C. United's Ben Olsen asked Beckham to trade jerseys with him after the game. Usually, these kinds of trades are made when it's country vs. country, in a friendly or some international tournament, especially the World Cup. I don't think it's ever happened after an MLS game in August, and I'd venture to say this was the ONLY exchange of jerseys by players from either team on this night. It actually wasn't even an exchange, technically, since Beckham never did take Olsen's D.C. United shirt. Hey, Olsen's got balls though because I'm sure EVERYONE on that field wishes they had the jersey from Beckham's first game. I mean, if you think about it, this could be one of those huge-ticket items on the auction block some day. Olsen might have just made himself a lot of money. Even Olsen, a veteran of the league and the U.S. national team, looks a little starstruck in the photo.
Ana Ivanovic Comes To Town
My favorite tennis player, Ana Ivanovic, is within driving distance of me and I'm just sitting on my ass at home or at my office. Ana won her match today at the Home Depot Center in Carson, so I figured I'd let you all know in case you were interested. Incidentally, if you need a guide around SoCal, gimme a call Ana, I'll be there for you.
Giada's "Looks" Of The Day
These are taken from the episode, "Pot luck" and offer some new poses from our favorite cook. My favorite one is the last shot, taken at the "after" party when Giada is serving her dishes to friends. I guess Giada is REALLY hoping that girl likes what she made. UPDATE: OK, OK, after some pressure I would be remiss to say that Madge gets the credit and was the inspiration for the "claw" photo.

Harry Potter On SNL
This is an old SNL skit on Harry Potter when Lindsay Lohan was the host a few years ago. Seems worthy to post considering the new Harry Potter movie came out a few weeks ago and Lindsay, well, you know the story:
Bonds Homer Comin' At Ya
This is a pretty cool "perspective" video of Bonds' record-breaking home run. This is from a fan who happened to sitting a few rows above where the ball landed. Pretty crazy how everything just turned into mayhem.
New York Papers On Bonds
There are many reasons to hate the New York Post (Rupert Murdoch being A-No.-1) but there are plenty of times when I love that tabloid rag. Today being one of them:
Conan O'Brien Satellite TV Skit
This is pretty good little skit from Conan. I especially like the first part that spoofs the Home Shopping Network. Craptabulous!
Giada's "Looks" Of The Day
OK, so this wasn't a great day for Giada, but they can't all be home runs, right? These shots come from the episode "Good Things Come in Small Packages." Giada does look good in pink though, but I like her better in other episodes.

Underage Drinking In Rosemead
Gotta love my hometown. I wonder if one of the stores in the story below was "La Pinarena," which sat right on the border of El Monte on Valley Blvd. and was a haven for underage kids to "score" beer during the mid-1980s on Friday nights before football games. Or I suppose it could have been a once-proud Round Table Pizza franchise, which also was famous for having a manager and Sunday crew that catered to the under-21 crowd (of one), especially during the NFL season. Although the old RT site is now a Asian restaurant (at least the last time I drove by Alpha Beta). Great, great memories though. Bonkers, Tules, and Legg-Johnston surely remember this. Thank God we never got busted.
Denise Richards Wants What?!?!
Ever since the whole Heidi Fleiss affair (and probably even before that), I've always had a rather low opinion of Charlie Sheen, at least as a person. I actually think he's a fairly decent actor and I've enjoyed his work from time to time, but just looking at him otherwise you can see the snake oil dripping off him like an overworked used-car salesman. So that's why the story below strikes me as rather strange as Charlie makes an amazing claim about his former wife, the beautiful (and very pregnant in this photo) Denise Richards.
Giada's "Looks" Of The Day
OK, starting a new feature today after having a conversation with my brother about Giada De Laurentiis. You all know Giada don't you? She's the hot chef on "Everyday Italian," a show on the Food Network. If you don't know Giada, you can learn about her here and here. Anyway, from this day on, I am going to try and post pictures of Giada from her show taken by my cellphone camera. Yeah, I know it's low tech, but that's what gives it charm in my mind, don't you think? Why pictures of Giada? Well, let's just say Giada likes to express herself while she's cooking, and that, combined with the pause button on my Tivo remote, make for an interesting end result. So here are my first Giada photos taking from the episode "Cooking for a bachelor."

The Ambiguously Gay Duo
While doing a bit of research for the Stephen Colbert post a few down from here, I came across an amazing fact. Does everyone remember on SNL when they did the TV Funhouse cartoons? One of them was called "The Ambiguously Gay Duo" featuring superheros Ace and Gary. Well, what I just found out was that the voices of those characters were Colbert (Ace) and Steve Carrell (Gary), of "The Office" and movie fame. You will recognize them once you watch the clip below, but before today I'd never put it together.
Barry Bonds Photo Of The Day
Garnett Gets The Love At Fenway
With the Red Sox in town to play the Angels starting tonight, it reminded me about last week's scene at Fenway Park. Can you imagine how sweet it would have been had this played out before one of the Giants' games last week at Dodger Stadium? This is a bitter, bitter pill for Lakers' fans. Although I do got to say that Kevin needs some help with his fastball.
Stephen Colbert And A-Rod
Admittedly, I'm an extremely casual watcher of the Stephen Colbert Show. I think the guy's hilarious, but as one friend puts it when it comes to practically everything in life, "there's only so many hours in the day." Anyway, I talking to someone at work about Alex Rodriguez (A-Rod) and he told me he was watching Colbert recently and the political pundit was talking about the Yankee slugger. But instead of pronouncing his nickname "AAAY-Rod" (emphasis on AAAY) he called him "uh-ROD" (notice the emphasis on the second syllable). For some reason, this struck me as hilarious. I could just hear Colbert saying it and thinking he's coming off cool to the sports geeks out there. Classic stuff, so thought I'd write about it.
Chris Rock Breathing Easy
Chris Rock is one funny mother-effer, but Monday he was breathing a real-life sigh of relief when a paternity test proved that he is not, repeat, NOT the father of a 13-year-old boy from Georgia, whose mother had claimed to be the case. Although the clip below doesn't have anything to do with paternity, it does have to with Chris Rock's "view" on marriage. It's very vulgar so be careful where you watch this:
SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — A lawyer for Chris Rock said Monday that a court-ordered DNA test proved Rock is not the father of a 13-year-old boy whose mother tried to sue the comedian for support earlier this year.
Rock's attorney, John Mayoue of Atlanta, said a Bulloch County judge sent results of the paternity test to lawyers on both sides of the case.
“The results of the test are that Chris Rock is not the father of this child,” Mayoue said. “It is conclusive.”
The mother, however, disputed the test results.
Kali Bowyer, who lives in Bulloch County west of Savannah, tried in March to file a paternity lawsuit against Rock seeking child support and medical coverage for her son, Jordan. She withdrew the lawsuit after court officials told her it was outside the southeast Georgia county's jurisdiction because Rock is a New Jersey resident.
However, Rock asked the Georgia court in April to start paternity proceedings to resolve the case. Bulloch County Superior Court Judge John R. Turner ordered DNA testing on Rock and the boy June 8.
Rock and his wife, Malaak, said in a statement Monday they were happy to put the case to rest. They accused Bowyer of telling “multiple lies” to sell her story to tabloids.
'Sull'aria' From Mozart's Figaro
As some of you might know, the sentimental side of me comes out from time to time -- remember the Fiesta Bowl post with highlights set to "Nessun Dorma"? -- and just now I was watching "The Shawshank Redemption" on HBO and I came across one of my most favorite scenes of all time. When Andy Dufresne defiantly plays the "Sull'aria? Che soave zeffiretto" from Mozart's "Le Nozze di Figaro" over the prison's loudspeaker and barricades himself inside Warden Norton's office. The maniacal look on Tim Robbins' face when the warden, standing outside his office door, demands Andy shut off the music, is priceless. Anyway, here is the scene:
Here it is from a performance of Figaro:
And here is a performance by "amateurs" in what appears to be in a church or something, but they sound really good:
Thank you for indulging me.
